Google Ads conversion tracking: test the completed action
Reliable campaign decisions depend on understanding what a conversion represents. A page view, a button click and a successfully received enquiry are separate events and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Define each action clearly
Write a plain-language definition for every conversion used in campaign reporting. Identify the business owner of the action and what evidence establishes completion. This helps prevent an incidental page interaction from being reported as a lead.
Use a genuine success condition
Review how the form, purchase or booking confirms completion. A click before validation does not establish success. If a confirmation page is used, check whether it can be reached without completing the intended action.
Test duplicate and failure paths
Submit valid and invalid entries, check repeated submissions and inspect whether multiple implementations record the same event. Use the appropriate platform diagnostics. Avoid sending personal form details into advertising event parameters.
Reconcile reports with operations
Compare recorded actions with the enquiry inbox or order system. Differences can reveal failed delivery, duplicate recording or a definition mismatch. Keep a change log so that reporting shifts can be explained after tracking updates.
Bring a useful brief to the review
Record the current setup, the decision you need to make, who owns the next action and how completion will be checked. Keep business evidence separate from assumptions.
Questions before you begin
Is clicking a submit button the same as a received lead?
No. The form may fail validation or delivery. Define and test the relevant success condition, then reconcile recorded events with the enquiry or order system.
