Marketing attribution: know what the report can explain

Customers may interact with several pages and campaigns before contacting a business. Attribution is a way of assigning credit within the available data, not a complete record of every influence on the decision.

Define the event first

Confirm what the report calls a conversion and how completion is measured. A page view and a received enquiry are not equivalent. Attribution discussions are premature when the underlying event is ambiguous.

Keep reporting boundaries visible

Record the sources, windows and systems used in each report. Different platforms can describe overlapping actions. Avoid adding their reported conversions together as if every entry represented a separate customer.

Reconcile with business records

Compare recorded actions with the enquiry or order system where possible. Investigate duplicate and missing records. Keep personal data handling appropriate and avoid putting private enquiry details into analytics parameters.

Use attribution as one input

Review customer feedback, campaign context and sales progression alongside reported credit. Explain uncertainty when tracking is incomplete. A useful decision can be well reasoned without claiming perfect measurement of every touchpoint.

Bring a useful brief to the review

Record the current setup, the decision you need to make, who owns the next action and how completion will be checked. Keep business evidence separate from assumptions.

Questions before you begin

Different reports may describe overlapping actions. Review their definitions, windows and data sources before treating the totals as separate customers.
