An SEO audit checklist that leads to useful fixes

An audit should explain what needs attention, why it matters and who can act on it. A long list of automated warnings is a starting point for investigation, not a finished delivery.

Establish the important pages

List the services, products and pages that matter to the business. Compare these with the URLs receiving impressions and enquiries. This prevents minor warnings on low-value pages from displacing problems on a core customer journey.

Inspect access and indexation

Check whether important pages can be reached through links and whether indexing instructions are intentional. Review canonical destinations and redirects in context. A page excluded for a valid reason should not be treated as a problem merely because a tool flags it.

Review intent and content

Read the page against the buying question it is meant to answer. Look for missing scope, confusing headings, duplicated destinations and weak internal links. Decide whether the page needs a focused revision, consolidation or a different place in the structure.

Create an implementation queue

For each issue, record the affected URL, evidence, recommended action and owner. Prioritise by likely customer impact and dependency. A useful handover distinguishes quick changes from development work and includes a way to verify each completed fix.

Bring a useful brief to the review

Record the current setup, the decision you need to make, who owns the next action and how completion will be checked. Keep business evidence separate from assumptions.

Questions before you begin

It identifies the affected URL, the evidence, the proposed fix, its owner and a verification step. Priorities should reflect the important customer journeys and dependencies.
